Before entering the sanctuary or the vestry…
Please allow the Choir to complete the ‘postlude’ and any additional songs that are part of our offering in worship – Our holding the sacred space is part of our common union - our being together in communion

I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!
The ‘grapes of wrath’ in the first reading today, and the words of Jesus in the Gospel might well give the impression of a God who will bring destruction to all who are unfaithful….. However, when read in the light of ‘divine promise’ we might appreciate that the force of destruction is unfaithfulness itself…
The “Division” Jesus speaks of can be seen as a calling back into integrity, dividing us from our own ‘self interests’ so that we more fully run the race that is set before us. And the desolate vineyard might well parallel a polluted world, an image of Eden that has not been cared for and delighted in….
When Jesus tells his friends he comes
to set the earth ablaze
it must at least be wise to pause
and ask what might be razed.

Reflections from Bali
Ramadan… As I’m contemplating the readings for this Sunday (in Bali) millions of Muslims here are beginning the month of Ramadam. Talking with some of them it is a delight to know and appreciate how much we share in our hearts as we seek the Divine in our daily lives. As we run with perseverance the race that is set before us it is good to know that we share the track with many others, and that we can perhaps improve our fitness by learning from each other…..
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is the Islamic month of fasting and of shared feasting, a time in which participating Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, and indulging in anything that is in excess or ill-natured; from dawn until sunset. Fasting is meant to teach the Muslim patience, modesty and spirituality. Ramadan is a time for Muslims to fast for the sake of God and to offer more prayer than usual. During Ramadan, Muslims ask forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance and help in refraining from everyday evils, and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds. Ramadan was the month in which the first verses of the Qur'an were said to be revealed to the Islamic Prophet Muhammad.
