East End Expenses....
We are nearing completion.......And this month our $200,000 loan repayments started. A few have already offered to provide $25/month to assist in their repayment. What a wonderful achievement if we can pay the load off early and then continue with our renewed commitment to further build on the ministry of the St Paul’s community.

12 Coins
As the floor was poured into the amphitheatre at the East End of the church... 12 coins were thrown into the poured limestone floor.... A foundation that recognises the wealth we inherit from the twelve apostles......

Reflection as we contemplate the growth of the new East End….
The bricklayer laid a brick on the bed of cement.
Then, with a precise stroke of his trowel, spread another layer,
And, without a by-your-leave, laid another brick.
The foundation grew visibly,
the building rose, tall and strong, to shelter the people.
I thought, Lord, of that poor brick buried in the darkness at the base
of the big building,
No one sees it, but it accomplishes its task, and the other bricks need it.
Lord, what difference whether I am on the rooftop or in the
foundations of your building, as long as I stand faithfully at the
right place?

Thank You
I want to acknowledge the work currently being done by Chris Jamieson with the wardens as the East End progresses. Most in the discussion group and more in the church will not be aware of the emails, meetings and discussions that are taking place "behind the scenes".
That so much is being done, with me away, is ................ STUNNING
Thank you Chris, Kim and Christabel and Ronny (who will also there in the thick of it all), for all that you are doing to build the future.......
It is a delight to be a part of all that is happening..... Especially now as all are also flat out with Safari preparations....
Many thanks for a Stunning effort

8 November 2009
The weddings last week may well have produced Dusty Maidens rather than dusky.
Many regrets, we are into reshaping and covering the powdery surfaces to stop the dust and rubbish around the site.
This coming week we have been promised the steel support to the east end wall. We need this to be erected before we can remove the rest of the "temporary" buildings as we believe the old buildings are holding up the wall. Once the steel is in place and the buildings removed our stunning stonework can be extended and the floor for our new chapel can be poured.
All sorts of details are being talked about, including light fittings, floor finishes and circular window design.
It's all happening!
More next week.

It is [being] Accomplished……20 September 2009
Thanks to much effort from our Church Council, Our Wardens, Chris Jamieson, Graham Kershaw, many volunteers and to each and every one of us, we’ve made a start…..
And will see our plans for the east End of St Paul’s unfold over the next few months……….. It is a time of change, a time of renewal, of re-Creation and a time to build, to see ourselves building toward the East, the direction of the Rising Son…….

The Builders are here.................. 15 September 2009
Floor boards are being removed...
Fencing is going up........
The East Wall has begun...........
May God bless her and all who rebuild her.

East End Progress 13 September 2009
The vestries have been cleared out in readiness for the builders…..
Wayne (our project manger) from Laneway Construction has been in hospital for tests, so let’s keep him and his team in our prayers as we work together to complete the project.
Church cleaning and flower arranging etc etc will operate from out of the studio and we will soon only have access via the church front door which will be padlocked….. So keys will be available either from the office or from a keysafe that is yet to be located……
We will need patience… some understanding and a lot of help as we get the building works underway….
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
East End Project
Meetings with the builder are getting more frequent…… Diocesan officials are getting together the necessary authorizations… and SOON…… Work will begin……
We should have a timetable for the building works available soon and that will then require us to get all the necessary preparations completed before the vestries and East End are turned into a building site…..
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The East End Project is the First Significant Change to the fabric of the “Church” in over 100 years....
Perhaps we are rekindling the Spirit that enabled this place to be built in the first place.....And... what we do today... might serve as a foundation for the next 100 years.........
Letters have been sent to all in the parish(well those in the parish directory) as we will soon be selecting a builder and entering into contractual commitments for the East End project.
Easter is auspicious time for us to be contemplating New Life... and the Newness of life for the parish of Beaconsfield that is symbolised in our resurrection of the East Wall

East End Design Meetings
Chris Jamieson is seeking to finalise all the design details for the East End project.. If you would like to contribute ideas and energy as we clarify all the details required for the building specification please come and join the discussion…..
Sunday afternoons (today and the following two Sundays) from 4pm – 6pm in the hall

East End Progress 1 Feb 2009
We have brought the diocesan CEO up to date with the Fremantle Council feedback that ‘requires’ us to amend the boundary between the church and the proposed development. The Church needs some extra land for parking that will encroach on the development and the development needs some extra land to satisfy density regulations…… And it looks like we can mutually satisfy both with a ‘loaves & fishes’ approach…..
Some new sketches are available in the hall… please have a look and comment … as we are now at the stage of needing to complete all the design characteristics that are necessary to complete the building specifications
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
East End & Housing Development..
We are hoping to finalize design details for the East End so that the building specifications can be finalized… Very Soon
We are looking at the best options for ‘strata sub-dividing’ the proposed units so that we can proceed with planning approval…
We are still talking to (and open to more options for) potential buyers (and investors) for the remaining two units… There are some creative ideas whereby two (or more) invest together and create a rental property…… and this might also be creative of some short stay or low income accommodation….

The East End
Now the roof is done, we’re getting into the final preparations for the East End and the new Community Development alongside the church. There are two units still available! A lot of work is still to be done before work can commence; Chris Jamieson is co-ordinating BOTH projects and over the next few months this will require a substantial amount of effort. Peter and the Warden’s will also be committing more of their resources to these projects as they continue to seek a sustainable future for this Divine Community…….
Together…. Each and All of us…… have an opportunity to lay new foundations for OUR future.
Where there's a Will there's a Way
As we come closer to getting the East End restoration underway we are looking at taking out a loan to complete the building works... This is an 'Act of Faith' by our Church council........ It is also an opportunity for us all to look to the Sustainability of our Community... If we ALL included St Paul's as a beneficiary in our wills (a bequest) then we could with more confidence plan ahead and continue to develop our future ministry.... Please consider this investment in our tomorrow (10% is a good guide!)
5 October
It Has Begun
On Friday 26th September the Planning Application for the renovation of the East End of the Church was submitted to the Fremantle Council…. As we await the outcome of the planning approval process, we have much to do in terms of finalizing design details, costings and establishing contracts… We also have an estimated $200,000 still to raise…..
Please give some prayerful thought and consideration to your contribution toward achieving this major step in the life of the St Paul’s community…. The Wardens and I will be writing to all members of the Parish seeking further support, for if we divide the task ahead by the members of the community it does not look at all daunting……
Living in Close Communion
Also on Friday 26th October the Planning Application for the Development of six units on the two blocks adjacent to the Church was submitted to Fremantle Council….
So far four “Families” have committed to making this vision of a ‘Living Community” a reality. Together with the community on the block behind the church we expect to have 11-12 ‘Families’ living around the Church….. This is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to realise a new model of “Being Church” and of creating a sustainable future for the whole St Paul’s community.
Chris Jamieson is taking on the role of Project Manager, and together with the wardens will be able to provide more details….. in the meantime please take a look at the plans for the St Paul’s precinct in the hall.

East End Update
We are locking in a quote to have the re-roofing undertaken before the end of the year. And this week we’ve met with a prospective builder for the east End Project and the Development of 166 & 168 Hampton Road… At the time of writing we’re also planning a meeting with Graham (the Architect) so that we can finalise design concepts, schedule detailed drawings and plans and then come up with a project plan….. It is possible that our (prospective) builder will start with the East End Wall and then progress to the proposed development of the units on 166/168….. It feels as if we’re underway now and things should soon start to happen.
We had a good response to our request for further donations in June…. However, as a community we still have to find more than half of the total project costs…. So all donations and fundraising ideas are very much welcomed……
East End & Re-Roofing Update
As many will have read in the news, steel prices have risen dramatically and our re-roofing has gone up by 40%. We are therefore approaching Lotteries West to seek an increase in their funding toward this part of our restoration. We must, however, also appreciate that building costs continue to escalate and our completion of the East End Project still requires substantial fundraising…. Please continue to consider your Giving as we seek together to continue building on the foundations of our community.
Thank You to those who have made a further commitment to Funding the East End Project….
Re-Roofing of St Paul’s will be the first step toward our major East-End renovations… We have secured a contractor and the cost is just over $50,000 - which is $15,000 over our earlier estimate. The work is subject to ‘WorkSafe Practices” and following their advice is being scheduled for the first ‘fine weather forecast’ in September.
East-End Development…. Progress is still very minimal as we are still seeking to secure a building company that can complete the work and the proposed development of 166 & 168 Hampton Road. There are numerous ‘investigations’ to be completed including the services of a ‘water diviner’ to establish underground water courses. Some surface drilling to identify limestone rock outcrops, as well as council and services plans and regulations that need to be taken into account. These activities are underway. And the next major initiative will be to look again at our capacity for fundraising. Currently we have raised around $100,000 bringing our total available funds for the project to around $119,000. In addition we have a Lotteries West Grant of $35,000….The project Budget was initially $350,00 and rising building costs will probably take that closer to $400,000 so we still have around $146,000 to find for completion of the project.
East End Update
Gary (our Project Manager) is making progress with re-roofing contractors, although with much frustration as contractors are too busy to respond to new enquiries… however we expect to have the roofing contractor scheduled in VERY SOON!
East End Progress note. Graham Kershaw recently completed working drawings for the project. We have made contact with Martin Colgan Builders (who have recently done the restoration work on St George's Cathedral) and they are going through the drawings to provide 'indicative costings'. We are expecting to hear from Martin some time in the coming week. The drawings have also been given to the Diocesan Architecture Committee for their
information.

Come and join Christabel on Wednesday at 7.30pm 1 Aug in the studio…The Initial Fundraising Committee Meeting will look at sharing the load and any further ideas to raise the $150,000 still needed to complete the East End project
Wednesday at 7.30pm in the studio
New on the website Some provisional plans that Graham Kershaw has drawn up. Inspirational!! Thank you Graham for your continued inspiration in drawing us together and drawing from us the possibilities for the re-creation of the East End. The very process is as much a reflection on who we are as the Heritage precinct is a reflection of our continuing journey….
Stained Glass Window
The group that are meeting regularly to learn about Leadlight windows and to design a window for the new East Wall invite YOUR input.
Please share your thoughts AND if you wish…. Please provide a design of your creation that can be collected at next Sunday’s AGM…
Draw a circle on a sheet of paper and create YOUR design.. or even a partial design…… This will give the group some more ideas to work with and is an opportunity for us all to explore our own creativity.
Stained Glass Windows
Anyone interested in contributing ideas, comments or sketches for stained glass windows in the East End is welcome to join a group meeting at X-Wrays(opposite the Luna on Essex cinema, central Freo) - at 8am on the 3rd and 17th July. More meetings and workshops to follow...
Thank you Graham for your continued inspiration in drawing us together and drawing from us the possibilities for the re-creation of the East End. The very process is as much a reflection on who we are as the Heritage precinct is a reflection of our continuing journey….
EAST END DESIGN 3 June 2007
Do you use the vestries….. Sacristans, Choir, Cleaners, Florists, Et al.
Please consider what we need when we create the new extension, storage/usage/space – your comments will provide the design input that Graham will require to progress with drawings for the East End project…
We have chalked in the Hall an area that is the proposed size of the new East End – And we have chalked the ‘footprint’ that the new area will occupy at the rear of the church..
Please get a feel for the space… And share your comments

Easter & the East End of the Church
Easter & the East End of the Church
Just to set our “East End Restoration” into a larger context… Here’s an interesting extract from the Parish Archives……
On the 20th May 1889, the chairman of the vestry laid the plans for a proposed Mission Church at Beaconsfield before the meeting and explained his views on the same, and by Easter, 1891, work had commenced on building the new Mission Church, now the Beaconsfield Parish Hall. In 1894 the land adjoining the Mission was purchased for the sum of £120
for a new church building
The cost of the New Church building……..£1,536.
It is auspicious timing, we are building anew, and living out the new life that is symbolised in the resurrection – an opportunity for us to realise our lives as a contemporary Acts of the Apostles……..
Again we are getting underway in the season of Easter and will need more “hands-on-deck” to keep our regular activities moving and to initiate the East End Building program, so please volunteer where you can and/or consider increasing your weekly offering so that we have some more flexibility in what is shaping up to be a creative process in the future shaping and direction of our community life….
++++++++++++++++++++++++
In the next couple of weeks we will be initiating a number of actions to keep the East wall project on track……
Those who have already made payments (provided cheques) will have noticed that cheques have not yet been banked…. This is because we are still establishing procedures with the National Trust and also have to determine how we will be able to reconcile all individual payments for receipting purposes……..
We are establishing a “Fundraising Committee” to seek additional sources of funding and to continue to submit grant applications…..
And we recognise that these NEW initiatives will have to be outside of (and in addition to) our regular fundraising……
It is clear that we will need more “hands-on-deck” to keep our regular activities moving and to initiate the East End Building program, so please volunteer where you can and/or consider increasing your weekly offering so that we have some more flexibility in what is shaping up to be a creative process in the future shaping and direction of our community life….

The East End Conversations
A Summary so far………..
Conversations on the East wall of the Church
Unless God builds the house, those who build it labour in vain (Psalm 127)
Thank you to Chris for facilitating a series of conversations and Thank You to Graham Kershaw who has “captured the conversations to date in a sketch….. Parish council will now continue the conversation and most probably look at creating a small group to clarify possibilities for us all to consider….

The East End
Two quotes came in this week to replace the asbestos roof of the church.. and we’re now waiting for some estimation for completely replacing the east wall and vestries……..
Seven of us continue to meet and to collate ideas as we tackle the options for renovation of the cracks in the East wall….
We are currently seeking quotes to get some idea of costs and also exploring the possibility of a Lotteries Grant.
Wheelchair access and a consolidation of the vestries into an open plan worship and working space are also part of the considerations….
A place for morning and evening prayer, for worship with an outward focus, a place for groups to meet and to explore liturgies from various traditions.
So many ideas and so much potential as we build tomorrow on the foundations of yesterday…… Please share YOUR ideas……..

The final conversation in our series was held 4 July 2006 and
considered concept drawings by Graham Kershaw, Architect. The
conversation affirmed a desire for:
1. The existing nave largely unchanged;
2. The focus on the altar in its present position;
3. The east wall reconstructed with similar finished appearance
rather than introducing new materials which may divert attention from
the altar;
4. Removal of the two existing doors in the east wall (and
resulting need for new access in some form);
5. A desire for natural light to the nave via the reconstructed
east wall;
6. A desire for the area of the "temporary" weatherboard-clad
buildings to be slightly enlarged, at least to the extent of forming
a rectangle from the present L shape;
7. A desire for modifications to this enlarged area to create a
stronger link between the building interior and the garden;
8. Principles of flexibility and simplicity to enhance various
uses of the new spaces (indoor and outdoor);
9. A sense that the new eastern space has:
(a) morning chapel use, drawing on its eastern aspect;
(b) facility for movement between the interior and the gardens;
(c) symbolically, a move of the church to the east (Jerusalem);
(d) potential uses which evolve from the energy experienced in
the new areas, provided flexibility is maintained in design and
furnishings ;
(e) present vestry uses e.g. robing and storage, being
incorporated so as to optimize space for other uses.
The main questions for the design brief are:
1. Are the existing nave and the new area conceptualized as one
worship space (extending eastward) or the creation of two (or more)
spaces each with its own focal points?
2. Should the wall to the arch behind the altar be removed to
open the existing nave (perhaps on specific occasions) to the new
area and beyond?
3. Is opening the arch combined with new screening / curtain
desirable as a means to create:
(a) visual access beyond the altar;
(b) eastern lighting to the nave;
(c) a new entry point to the sanctuary from the vestry;
(d) symbolic openness of the church to the space/environment
beyond the altar;
(e) more flexibility in use of both the existing and new space
OR does opening the arch detract from the existing nave and sanctuary
such that it should be ruled out?
4. Is a highlight (? round) window high in the east wall a
better means to introduce east light into the nave than light from
behind (? detracting from) the altar?
5. If the new space is envisaged as being distinct and separate
from the existing nave:
(a) where is its focal point - whether interior or exterior
(garden) or a combination of the both garden and interior;
(b) how to locate its entry without significantly reducing usable
floor space?
6. How to create the transition (physically and symbolically)
between the nave/sanctuary and the new area via the reconstructed
wall?
7. Uses of the new area/s.
You are invited to reflect on these questions and consider the
concepts drawn up by both Peter and Graham.
All feedback is welcome.
